The organization consists of representatives of national aphasia associations, particularly in Europe, but also in the U.S., Canada, Japan and Argentina.

AIA has its headquarters in Brussel, Belgium.

Since the early 1990s, the AIA invited members to the General Assembly (GA) once a year.

In October 2008 the AIA General Assembly meeting was held in Tallinn, Estonia. In 2009, an extraordinary GA in April to discuss the AIA's future and how we can make the AIA more accessible. This meeting was followed by a regular GA meeting in September 2009, when it was decided the future of the questions and the new statutes and new membership. Both meetings were held in Brussel. At the regular GA meeting a new Board of Governors was elected.
