This year’s General Assembly took place in Bordeaux from 23 to 26 September 2026 during the ‘Science of Aphasia’ scientific conference (bringing together researchers and healthcare professionals to discuss the latest advances in aphasia). The AIA was represented at the conference with a special symposium entitled ‘Living with Aphasia’. People with aphasia from various countries and from Bordeaux shared their personal stories.

This event was highly enriching thanks to the diverse testimonies from Hanka Mayhew (UK, Ambassador for Say Aphasia and AIA member), Alexia Kountouri (Cyprus, President of the AIA) and Margot Turcat (France, writer). This was followed by a discussion on the topic: “How to guide people with aphasia towards support groups, whilst taking the time factor into account.”

We also had a lovely meeting with the Bordeaux aphasia support group, GARB. Afterwards, we visited the old town of Bordeaux, with its warm and welcoming residents. Finally, we rounded off the day with a meal with everyone attending the symposium – scientists, patients, professionals… an enriching exchange to help us move forward, all together.

The following day, the General Assembly of the AIA (International Aphasia Association) – attended by representatives from 14 countries, both in person and via videoconference – was equally informative. The representatives from each country were all united by the same cause: raising awareness of aphasia; combating isolation; developing musical skills; preparing for International Aphasia Day on 20 October, and so on.
A Zoom meeting will be organised on Friday 27 November, during which representatives from the national associations will present their progress reports and plans in three slides.
